365体育首页London and Online, 1–30 July 2020
Our expanded, hybrid Classic Week at Christie’s London in July totalled £39,702,125, celebrating art from antiquity to the 21th century through eight online-only auctions and four live auctions.
The series was headlined on 29 July by the new Classic Art Evening Sale, combining Old Master paintings, drawings, sculpture, books, furniture and objects. Bidders responded with enthusiasm to this innovative concept sale, with 90% sold by value, exceptional prices in every category and participation from 22 countries across 5 continents.
The top price was achieved by Rubens’ enigmatic Portrait of a young woman, which sold for £3.9 million. The recently rediscovered relief sculpture of the Death of Lucretia, attributed to Antonio Lombardo, was heavily competed for, realising more than seven times the low estimate and setting a new record price for the artist at auction at £3.7 million. Sarah Bernhardt’s Self-portrait as a Chimera, inkwell also created a frenzy of bidding, resulting in the work making ten times its low estimate.
Private collections saw notably strong results, with fierce bidding both in the room and online. Wilton Crescent: A Robert Kime Interior was 87% sold by lot and 92% sold by value, while Gloria: Property from the late Dowager Countess Bathurst was 91% sold by lot and 95% sold by value – a testament to the unique appeal of collection sales and the enduring power of provenance.
Elsewhere, online-only and dual live/online sale formats performed particularly well. The Collector live and online auctions realised £3.2 million, with 18% of this total attributed to Asian buyers. 365体育首页, our cross-category online sale of Old Masters and contemporary art, achieved 113% of its low estimate.
